Harvest Monday 8/27/12

Join in the harvest fun at Daphne's Dandelions!

I have been getting enough beans to freeze! I have frozen 5 bags of 5 servings so far! The Dragon Tongue beans are coming on the strongest right now.

As you can see, the Matt's Wild Cherry tomatoes are not much bigger than a raspberry! I wish I could find some yellow ones just as small, my daughter just loves the tiny ones and wants some yellow! I have been searching for next year.

Starting to get a couple of tomatoes again. Maybe we are getting ready for a second round!

Raspberries are doing pretty well too. Maybe if I saved them all week their would be enough for a dessert, but they get eaten up really fast! The peppers are picking up a bit too, which is good because my son likes them packed in his lunches. I went out in the dark one morning to get one for him and he thought it was funny. But there are not a lot of vegetables he will eat, at least I know he will eat those and not throw them away!

Cut a bit of purple basil this morning. I had to move it a couple of weeks ago because it began to get too much shade and wasn't growing well. I am glad it has survived the move in this hot dry weather!

  2. Glad you have the Matt's Wild Cherry for comparison. I've heard about them maybe half a dozen times, but never saw them up against something else to judge the size. Such a beautiful harvest!

  3. Beautiful harvest! The yellow and green beans look very pretty together. I wouldn't be able to save up raspberries. They are lucky if I am able to take a picture of them before they are eaten. I hope someone has a suggestion on a very small yellow tomato that your daughter can enjoy.

  6. Too much heat for you and not enough for me, wouldn't it be nice if we could swap a little heat for a little cool. :) You garden seems quite productive in spite of the heat. The red raspberries provide such a jolt of color to your photos, beautiful.

Have you heard of yellow currant tomatoes? They are a very small fruited yellow cherry tomato, tasty and incredibly productive. I grew them once years ago and the only thing I didn't like about them was harvesting them, it took so long to pick all those little tomatoes.

  8. Nice variety and color in the harvest. I tried the Matt's Wild Cherry this year after seeing yours last year and didn't care for them. Tough skin and not as sweet as I expected. Maybe it was the weather, which has been awful. But they do seem to be resistant to the crud that is affecting the rest of my tomatoes.

    1. Sorry you didn't like them David. I don't know what my daughter loves so much about them other than they are tiny. I am not much for cherry tomatoes, so I only use them in stuff like bruschetta and they are fine for that. I bet if I got her a yellow it would be sweeter though. Maybe my son would like them as much too.

    1. Nancy, I have only used it once so far, in Bruschetta, and it seemed the same, just pretty purple! Maybe others have used it differently. I am sure it isn't like the ones that are cinnamon or spicy or lemon, those I am sure have a different flavor.

  11. Everything is looking great!! We have to force ourselves to take 1/2 of the raspberries we pick and wash and freeze them. Otherwise the kids would have each picking gone in about 30 seconds. Now we have to keep the kids out of the freezer because they like them frozen too!!
