Harvest Monday

~Edited 7/23Please see post for July 23rd as I mistakenly re-posted this past post for Harvest Monday July 23rd.~

It has been a long time since I have gotten in on Daphne's Harvest Monday! I got this one ready over the weekend so I wouldn't miss out this week! Hope your garden's are surviving the heat and droughts!
The first two cucumbers, they are looking much better than last year, but not producing much. Beans are struggling to survive after they got so dried out while on our vacation. One small onion that was planted last spring.

The raspberries are pretty much done until the next round which I am hoping will be in a few weeks. I have a mixture of summer bearing and everbearing plants. (Fall Red, Latham, and Heritage.) I have had about 4 strawberries this year. The plants look healthy, but just aren't producing much. These are from everbearing plants as well.

Thinned the carrots a bit and was hoping these would taste good, they did not, so I cooked them and poured honey over them and my daughter ate them right up!

The zucchini is doing well for now. I do see signs of SVB frass at the bases of some of the plants. 2 of the plants are just ginormous, so hoping that they can beat the svb's for a bit. And I was so thrilled to pick a bucket of potatoes! I tried those pop up potato bags last year and did not have much luck. I left some in one of the bags last year and they are growing crazy so maybe I will get some out of the bag this year. These are Red La Soda potatoes. I also have Irish Cobbler growing in another bed, but have not dug much for them.

Found this cucumber hiding and it was a bit big, and bitter, but the kids thought it was ok and ate most of it!
Found 2 more Dragon Tongue beans, hitting the big time now! The beans are doing pitifully right now. Maybe the heat or the bugs. Japanese beetles seem to be shredding the pole bean leaves. I also found Mrs. Potts out there, at a glance I thought it was something growing until I got a little closer. DD can scatter toys anywhere and everywhere worse than any kid I have ever met!

Last onion from last year. This crookneck squash plant is quite gigantic as well. And there is one lonely Dragon Tongue bean on the top of the pile there. They really are not producing anything. The zucchini plants have just gotten too big I guess and are shading them out.
This mornings small harvest. I couldn't help but pick one of these pretty sunflowers for the table. DD loved it!

  1. Looks like you're getting decent harvest even if things aren't going as wonderfully as you may have hoped in the garden.

This year for thie first year, I tried cutting out the SVB caterpillar instead of just letting the plants succumb. So far (3 weeks now), it has worked well - 4 of my 7 plants have survived which is 4 more than would have if I had not at least tried :)

    1. I have a feeling that if I tried to cut them out it would destroy the plant because there are many spots. I did this the past few years. Plus I have tried shooting them up with BT. But I just didn't feel like messing with it this year ;) I have been a lazy gardener this year.

  3. You have such a wonderful variety of vegetables coming from your garden. The heat wave has definitely been hard on the beans this year.

  5. Mrs Potts in the garden?! That made me smile :) Even though your garden has been struggling. It looks like you have enjoyed a good harvest.

Red La Soda potatoes look beautiful as do the zucchini, cukes, berries, and beans.

  7. My potatoes didn't do all that well this year due to hot/dry weather we had. Your potatoes look great. Maybe I missed some in my three potatoe boxes that will sprout up next year! I love surprises.

  8. I love the sunflower garnish! I'll have to remember that one the next time our table lacks pinache. (As if my very bad dog would ever let me grow a sunflower.) Very pretty potatoes.

  9. Nice harvest, the last photo looks so cute. I'm not doing well with beans also, the scorching heat is too much for them.

  10. Nice looking harvests. Hope your squash plants make it. I don't seem to have SVB (knock on wood!)

  11. Lovely array of veg. I often find summer grown carrots go green at the top for me and never taste as good as the autumn/winter grown ones.

    1. Yes, these carrots just need much more time. They take forever in the summer here, but I think I will try growing some later and see how that goes!

  13. Those Red La Soda potatoes are really fine looking. Yum! Sorry your beans are struggling with your heat. Mine are taking their time getting to harvest state because we keep alternating between reasonably warm to cool and wet. The beans really need a week or two of hot and sunny to get their groove on.

  15. Those raspberries look delicious. I can't wait until mine start producing. I haven't watered them though and they look quite dehydrated. I ought to get out and treat them better.

  16. Wow what a great harvest. We are still a few weeks off from having the variety you are getting right now! Any time I've grown carrots this time of the year I've never been very impressed with the taste. They just don't seem to like the heat. I've found spring and fall/winter are the best times for carrots. That reminds me I need to get some seeds in the ground this week.

  17. It all looks great, how disappointing that the carrots didn't taste great though.
